No tricks, no exploits: just the ten things veterans on Reddit, Steam and YouTube repeat to every new player, with the official mechanics under each confirmed where an official note exists.
Before the first wave
1. The first build phase has no timer. Use it. Before wave one of any stage you can place and pick up blocks freely (pickup works within the same build phase), so test how far you can push the monster line and which runes you can cover before committing. Community guides call this the single biggest early skill. Related official support: blocks are the game's core system per the store description, and build-phase behavior is documented in community play consistently.
2. Hold Shift to place towers repeatedly, Space to restart. Quality-of-life controls that are easy to miss: hold Shift to keep placing the same tower without reselecting (emergency cheap towers mid-wave), and Space to start the next run fast. The 1.0 notes added more controls worth binding to muscle memory: Q and E rotate the camera, ESC skips boss intros you have seen.
Building your economy
Spare shapes are not dead weight either: the refinement screen converts unwanted blocks into the ones your maze wants:

3. Draw cards on a schedule, and respect the hand limit. Community endless-guide wisdom: draw little early, about three per round mid-game, four late while the maze is still growing, because a full hand stops new draws. Gold you do not spend on draws is gold for towers and the two-way tower upgrades.
4. Sell-and-rebuild is part of the plan. Big 3x3 towers need space you will not have on turn one; community players deliberately place to resell later. One 1.0 relic (Explosive Demolition) even pays damage for mid-battle selling, official proof that selling is a designed tool, not a failure state.
Runes, relics and elements
Reward picks feed the same system: attribute cards that bind effects to block shapes:

5. A rune pays only for the tiles it covers. A 2x2 tower sitting one tile on a buff rune collects a quarter-strength effect (community-documented scaling, consistent with the 1.0 rune reworks). Plan tower footprints around runes like they are real estate.
6. Read the relics before you commit to towers. At run start the relics are visible before your card picks: build toward the relic, or reroll for one that fits. Mid-run, the same rule: the community's opening advice for hard runs is grab relic nodes early on the map and let towers follow.
7. Mix elements instead of stacking one. Chill plus stun, poison plus burn: the 2024 community tier logic and the ten 1.0 relic reworks (Frost Venom chaining poison into chill, Volatile Poison detonating burning poisoned monsters) both point the same way: the game pays for interactions, not monocultures.
Talents and tools
8. Spend XP and respec freely. The talent tree is permanent progression but respeccing is free at any time, per community guides; nothing is locked in. Early favorites to grab: Ember Spark (the fire defends itself), reroll charges, cheaper tower upgrades, and the skill that removes an already-placed block.
9. Use the priority settings, the damage chart and the drawing tool. Every tower type (and every individual tower) has a targeting-priority setting; a poison tower that skips already-poisoned targets and a sniper set to the back line are different weapons. The damage chart (expanded in 1.0 to include relic and fire-source damage) tells you which towers are actually earning; the drawing tool paints route plans on the board.
10. The Compendium is your bestiary. Enemy effects, relic texts, completion records: it is in-game and, as one community video put it, the only wiki the game has had until now. When a wave kills you, the answer for why is usually in there.

FAQ
What should I do first in Emberward?
Play the tutorial region freely, keep the first maze simple, and put your early gold into a couple of reliable towers plus card draws. Unlock talents as XP arrives and respec without fear; the tree is free to rearrange.
How do I reset my talent points?
In the talent screen, free of charge, any time (community-documented; the game advertises no cost for respec). Experimental builds are cheap, so try them.
Can I change a tower's targeting?
Yes: per tower type and per individual tower. The default settings are sensible; the wins come from overriding them (poison towers skipping poisoned targets, snipers on the back line).
Does Emberward have cheats or a trainer?
We do not provide cheat tools or trainers, ever. It is a single-player game so what you do on your own machine is your business, but this site's deal is facts and strategy only.
What is the fastest way to improve?
Learn the rune-scaling rule, read relics before tower picks, and use the damage chart to cut dead towers. Those three habits carry most of the distance; the rest is maze mileage.
